This past Saturday, we hosted our first ever (and in the future, annual) Ed Network Gathering with 200 of our closest friends in the Birmingham community. Students, parents, educators, and partners joined us at Social Venture in Woodlawn to celebrate success stories and share information about how to work together to improve outcomes for students in Birmingham City Schools. Carver’s first Network Night was as big of a success as our inaugural event at Tuggle last month, and we couldn’t be more excited to see how this thing continues to grow. Yesterday, 10th-grade students in the Academy of Engineering at Carver High School were hosted by engineers from Alabama Power at the company’s Technology Applications Center in Calera. A division of the marketing department, the TAC hosts engineers that test products for a number of industrial and corporate partners to find the most energy-efficient solutions for their products and businesses. This Thursday, we kicked off our Raise Up! Network initiative with the first ever Network Night at Tuggle Elementary. Parents, students, teachers, and community members joined Ed staff and Trusted Space Partners for a night of fellowship, conversation, and marketplace exchanges. Want to know what we mean? This past Friday marked the first iteration of the Career Development Conference on public speaking for 12th-grade students in the Birmingham City Career Academies. Students from six Birmingham City high schools came to the Harbert Center for a full-day of professional development around public speaking, including sessions on story-telling and executive presence, and group-feedback sessions with Birmingham Rotary Club members. At Ed, we always celebrate the addition of new partners to our roster, and are especially excited to announce Brasfield & Gorrie as the new signature partner for Huffman’s Academy of Architecture and Construction as part of the Bridging the Gap program. On October 16, Brasfield & Gorrie welcomed students to their offices for the first time, engaging students in a day filled with hands-on experiences to expose them to careers in construction. Yesterday, Ed kicked off a brand-new College 101 initiative at Carver High School with the first Alabama College Preview Day. This year, Ed will support a series of in-school presentations for Carver Juniors featuring over 10 different post-secondary institutions from around the state of Alabama. Each time, a group of 15-20 students will be selected to eat lunch with the admissions representatives after the informational sessions, ask questions, and learn more about the institutions that catch their attentions.
