College Admissions Made Possible (CAMP) is the vision of Dr. Martin Nalls, CAMP’s Chairman and Founder, and grew out of his experience in Leadership Birmingham. A graduate of Fayette County High School, Dr. Nalls was the first person in his family to earn a degree from a four-year college. As a “first-gen” himself, Dr. Nalls appreciates the fact that low-income and minority high school students often need inspiration to imagine themselves as college students and professional counseling to help them actualize that vision.
Dr. Nalls holds a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Montevallo and Education Specialist and Doctorate in Educational Leadership degrees from UAB. Nalls started his career in education as a Social Studies teacher, and once in administration, quickly advanced to the position of Principal at Homewood Middle School in 2008 and to Director of Support Services for Homewood City Schools in 2013.
CAMP’s powerful staff enlists the help of professional college advisors to facilitate its programs; the organization offers four core services to students participating in its programs — College Admissions Workshops, Individual/Group College Counseling, Test Preparation, and College Tours and College Fairs. In its brief history, CAMP has served approximately 1000 students.
CAMP has partnered with the Ed Foundation to provide services for Birmingham City students in all seven high schools: CAMP counselors facilitate PLAN test prep sessions and college application workshops for the College Prep Institute and were key in organizing the 2012-2013 iteration of College 101. On Ed’s continuing partnership with CAMP, Dr. Nalls says, “We are excited to be working with the Birmingham Education Foundation and Birmingham City Schools to bring CAMP’s full array of services – particularly high-quality, professional-level college prep services and college advising – to students throughout Birmingham City’s high schools.”
